There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the villages around Ullswater and further afield in towns such as Penrith and Keswick. The following are just a few suggestions with their distance from the cottage, but there are many more to explore.

There is an 8.5 mile circular walk from the cottage to Aira Force via Gowbarrow Fell which has stunning views of Ullswater as well as very varied scenery. The Royal is only a few hundred yards off the route, about half-way, so is an ideal place to take a break for a meal or a drink.

Askham

Askham is approximately 5.8 miles from our cottages. Instead of driving the whole way, there is a pleasant walk across the fells from Pooley Bridge to Askham which takes an hour or so.

The road bridge at Pooley Bridge is currently being reinstated so the road is closed to cars. There is a temporary footbridge, also suitable for bicycles. Distances below are via the bridge. Until the road bridge is open, add 9.4 miles for journeys by car.
